Online Yoga vs In-Home Yoga Classes: Which Is Right for You?
"Should I book online yoga classes or have someone come to my home?" - it is the single most common question new students ask us. The honest answer is: both work brilliantly, but they suit different people, schedules, and budgets.
This article is a clear, honest side-by-side comparison drawn from teaching both formats for years. By the end, you'll know exactly which option fits you best.
Cost: where the difference is biggest
This is usually the first deciding factor:
- Online classes at Yog Varanasi start at ₹2,000 per month for 20 sessions. That works out to about ₹100 per class.
- In-home classes are ₹8,000-10,000 per month depending on distance from Shivpur. That's ₹400-500 per class.
Why the difference? In-home sessions include the instructor's travel time, fuel, and dedicated 1-on-1 attention. Online classes leverage time across multiple students in the same batch.
If budget is a constraint, online classes deliver 80% of the value at 25% of the cost.
Personal attention
In-home is the clear winner here. Your instructor is in the same physical space, can adjust your alignment manually, feel the tension in your muscles, and design every minute around your specific body.
Online classes have group sizes of 3-8 students. The instructor watches you on video and gives verbal cues - and modern video conferencing is sharper than people expect - but it cannot match the depth of one-on-one in-person attention.
If you have a specific injury, condition, or therapeutic goal, in-home is worth the extra cost.
Convenience and time
Online wins on convenience:
- No coordinating arrival times
- You can join from anywhere in India - travel for work, visit family, no missed classes
- No prep needed for the house (cleaning, hosting)
- Easy to schedule around early mornings or late evenings
In-home has its own convenience advantage: no need to set up your device, find good lighting, or worry about WiFi. The teacher arrives, the class happens, the teacher leaves. For some students, that simplicity is gold.
Privacy
Some students prefer not to invite an instructor into their home for personal or cultural reasons. Online classes solve this perfectly - you practise in your own private space with the instructor only seeing what your camera captures.
Others find the opposite - they prefer the privacy of an in-home session (no other students watching) over a group online batch.
Consistency and accountability
This is more nuanced than it appears.
In-home classes have built-in accountability: when an instructor is travelling 5-10 km to reach you at 6 AM, you'll find it almost impossible to skip. The social commitment is strong.
Online classes need slightly more discipline because nobody is at your door. However, the trade-off is flexibility - if you wake up exhausted, you can switch to the evening batch. If you're travelling, you can still attend from anywhere. Many of our most consistent students are online students for this reason.
Quality of the workout itself
Here's a surprise for skeptics: the actual practice quality is comparable. Both formats:
- Cover the same poses, breathwork, and meditation
- Allow the instructor to correct your form (verbally for online, hands-on for in-home)
- Deliver the same physical and mental benefits
- Provide session recordings (for online, on request)
The key is showing up consistently. A student who attends online classes 5 days a week will outperform a student who attends in-home twice a week. Frequency beats format.
The hybrid approach
Many of our long-term students do both - and it works beautifully:
- 1-2 in-home sessions per week for deep alignment work and therapeutic focus
- 3-4 online sessions per week for maintenance, flexibility, and morning energy
This gives you the personal touch of in-home with the affordability and convenience of online. We can design a custom hybrid plan for any student.
Which one is right for you?
Choose in-home if:
- You live in Varanasi (we currently serve Varanasi for in-home)
- You have a specific medical condition or injury needing close attention
- You learn better with hands-on adjustments
- You want maximum accountability
- You prefer a quieter, distraction-free environment
- Budget is comfortable at ₹8,000-10,000/month
Choose online if:
- You live outside Varanasi - anywhere in India works
- You travel frequently for work
- You're on a tighter budget
- You're a confident self-starter
- You enjoy the energy of group classes
- Your schedule changes week to week and you need flexibility

Common myths debunked
"Online yoga can't correct my posture." Not true. A skilled instructor sees more from a camera angle than you think. We catch and correct posture daily across online classes.
"In-home yoga is only for rich people." Not really. The monthly cost (₹8,000) is comparable to a mid-range gym membership in any Indian metro - and it includes door-to-door service.
"Group classes are inferior to private." Group classes (online or in-person) bring their own magic - the shared energy of practitioners breathing together is something private sessions cannot replicate.
